Spain is made up of Autonomous Regions fashioned by its rich cultural past. There are 17 Autonomous Communities where central Government has devolved power, much like the UK has achieved with Wales and Scotland. The 17 Regions also have 2 additional cities which are not Provinces in their own right - Melilla and Ceuta

Provinces
Below this first tier of Regions is that of Provinces, there are 52 in total, which are territorial in nature, and some would argue hold very little importance, they are however important when voting, as each is an electoral district. The Provinces were the foundations for the establishment of the Autonomous Regions.

Finally we come to Municipalities which are the basic level of Spanish Government, there are 8112 in total which can range from the Municipality of Madrid, with a population of about 3 million to that of Villarroya (La Rotja) with a population of 11 (2006), the Municipalities have offices at a Town Hall with a Mayor. The municipalities are essentially the Villages, Towns and Cities.
So in summary Spain as a Nation is made up of Villages, Towns and Cities which are in their own right ‘Municipalities’ and these are in turn part of ‘Provinces’ which are part of the bigger picture of the Autonomous Regions. To best understand the makeup, treat each Autonomous Region as a ‘Country’ and as a Country it will have Counties – The Province, which is made up of Villages, Towns and Cities which are the Municipalities.
The Costa's
The Spanish Costa's literally means the ‘Coasts of Spain’ if you picture the Coast of Spain running from the North (Barcelona – Costa Dorada) down to the South and Costa Almeria. Each has many benefits and all have lovely beaches.
